TYRANNOSAURUS SUE
The most complete, T Rex ever found, and now located in the Field Museum, Chicago. These photos were taken during a field trip to the USA last year, after which we went to Chicago specifically to see this truly amazing fossil.
Sue was unveiled at the Field Museum on 17th May 2000, and stands 13 feet tall at the hip, and 42 feet long.
The skull is a replica, because the genuine skull, which is on the upper floor of the museum, is just too heavy for the framwork supporting this incredible beast.
The T Rex was found by a fossil hunter, Sue Hendrickson, working with a commercial fossil hunting team from the Black Hills Institute.
Thus this Tyrannosaurus was named "Sue".
Soon after discovery the bones became the centre of a five year dispute over who actually owned the creature. Was it the fossil hunters, the rancher, the Sioux Indians, or possibly the government.
Eventually ownership was settled, and in 1997, the musem bought the T Rex for $8.4 million.
Now we can all go to see her, and marvel at the true magnificence of the greatest of the carnivorous dinosaurs
